In Variety, I use four other directories and NOT the Favorites directory, so that will work out fine. Since I am not using my “Favorites” directory for anything I will copy some of my pictures that do render nearly correctly into that directory and set Slideshow to use that exclusively. The package for Variety “recommends” variety-slideshow, so Variety also does not strictly depend on the slideshow being present, but apt-get will install it by default when you install Variety.
Thus you don’t get a configuration UI but the command-line interface is pretty good. Variety and Variety Slideshow are separate packages ( variety, variety-slideshow), so the slideshow can be installed as a standalone application even if you don’t have Variety. I decided for a more modular approach this time.

To install, either do this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:variety/next I have deployed it into the ppa:variety/next repository – this is the PPA I use for testing out new experimental features of Variety. It runs well on my machine, but before I release it officially, I’d like more people to give it a try and give feedback on how it performs, whether the dependencies installed OK on your machine, etc. Variety Slideshow is now in the official PPA. This depends which value you have within your sktop file on line 4: Exec=xscreensaver -nosplash.NOTE: This post is outdated, as Variety Slideshow is already released in the official PPA. This should, somewhere in the list, tell you where sktop is. To find out if this is the issue: first run locate sktop. Into your startup list, it would not work as xscreensaver is not set up with the type application. However, for some reason, in many of these tutorials, the above command is incorrect.
