In Variety, I use four other directories and NOT the Favorites directory, so that will work out fine. Since I am not using my “Favorites” directory for anything I will copy some of my pictures that do render nearly correctly into that directory and set Slideshow to use that exclusively. The package for Variety “recommends” variety-slideshow, so Variety also does not strictly depend on the slideshow being present, but apt-get will install it by default when you install Variety.

Thus you don’t get a configuration UI but the command-line interface is pretty good. Variety and Variety Slideshow are separate packages ( variety, variety-slideshow), so the slideshow can be installed as a standalone application even if you don’t have Variety. I decided for a more modular approach this time.

To install, either do this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:variety/next I have deployed it into the ppa:variety/next repository – this is the PPA I use for testing out new experimental features of Variety.
